How to start a retail business the right way (and avoid costly mistakes)
Thinking about starting a retail business?
Or maybe you’ve already started…but things feel harder than they should.
People are searching:
“How to start a retail business successfully”
“What do I need to open a shop?”
“Why is my retail business not working?”
“How to attract customers to my store”
And most advice out there is either:
Too generic
Or too late
So if I had to start again today, knowing everything I know now…
I would do things very differently.
Watch the full episode below
Why most retail businesses struggle early on
It’s not because people don’t work hard.
It’s because they start like this:
Choosing products based on what they like
Posting randomly on social media
Hoping customers will just “find them”
Trying to do everything at once
And what that creates is:
A business that feels chaoti
Sales that feel inconsistent
Constant second guessing
If I was starting a retail business today, here’s what I’d do
1. I would get clear on WHO the shop is for
Not “everyone”
That’s the fastest way to struggle.
Instead:
Who is your ideal customer?
What do they actually want?
What problem are you solving for them?
Because when this is clear:
Your marketing becomes easier
Your products make more sense
Customers feel like your shop is for them
2. I would choose products that are easy to say yes to
One of the biggest mistakes new retailers make:
Selling products people like… but don’t need
You want products that are:
Easy to understand
Easy to justify
Easy to buy
Think:
Gifts
Problem-solving products
Everyday-use items
3. I would focus on attracting customers consistently
Most shops rely on:
Hope
Footfall
Occasional posts
Instead, I’d build a simple customer attraction system
This includes:
Showing up on Google when people search
Posting content that speaks to your ideal customer
Giving people a reason to visit
Because without this…
Even the best shop stays quiet.
4. I would make the shop impossible to ignore
Standing out is everything.
If your shop blends in…
You lose before people even walk in.
So I’d focus on:
Clear messaging
Strong window displays
Obvious positioning
Customers should instantly know:
What you sell
Who it’s for
Why they should come in
5. I would design the shop to sell (not just look nice)
This is where most retailers lose money.
They create a shop that looks good…
But doesn’t help customers decide.
I’d focus on:
Guiding customers through the space
Highlighting bestsellers
Creating bundles and pairings
Because your shop should do this:
Help customers buy, not just browse
6. I would build systems from day one
This is the difference between:
A stressful business
And a scalable one
I’d build systems for:
Attracting customers
Converting sales
Increasing average spend
Bringing customers back
Because without systems…
Everything feels harder than it needs to be
How to increase retail sales without constant promotions
Most retailers fall into this trap:
Discounting to drive sales
But that’s not sustainable.
Instead, I’d focus on:
Better product positioning
Clear buying triggers
Helping customers decide faster
Because when your shop is set up properly…
Sales happen more naturally
The key priorities every retail business should focus on
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, simplify it to this:
Attract customers
Convert customers
Increase spend
Everything else supports these.
