How to Fix Slow-Selling Products Without Discounting

Hello! I'm Samuel Chapman.
I'm on a mission to show you that every product based business can flourish and grow, no matter the challenges. Regardless what you sell, or whether you have a physical or online location.
With the right knowledge, tools, and a bit of inspiration, you can achieve amazing results.
Ever launched a product you were convinced would fly off the shelves…
…and then it just sat there, collecting dust?
You’re not alone. Every independent retailer and ecommerce business owner faces the mystery of a slow seller. But here's the truth:
Most slow-selling products aren’t bad.
They’re just misunderstood.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through the 5-step process I use with my retail coaching clients to fix slow-moving products, without panic, price drops, or guesswork.
Let’s turn those ‘meh’ products into magnets.
Why Are My Products Not Selling?
Before we dive into the fix, let’s bust a myth:
Your product is probably not the problem.
The real issue is usually misalignment between your product and one of the following:
-
Your message
-
Your platform
-
Your audience
-
Your visuals
-
Your urgency
When even one of those is off, sales stall.
But when they all align?
That’s when customers start Buying Now.
YOUR GUIDE TO
HUGE SALES!
Discover the 7 essential ingredients you need to create an irresistible offer your customers can't say No to!
Get Yours Here1. Reposition the Product
What retailers search:
-
How to reposition a product for more sales
-
How to sell the transformation, not the features
If your product isn’t selling, it might just be in the wrong lane.
Most brands describe what the product is.
But customers buy what it does for them.
Example:
You sell lavender soap.
But what you’re really selling is:
“Your 5-minute spa moment after a long day.”
Try this:
Ask yourself:
-
What role does this play in my customer’s day?
-
What identity does it support or express?
-
What problem does it quietly solve?
Bonus Tip:
If your product has multiple potential uses or audiences, test a different message each week. One will hit. Sales will follow.
2. Upgrade the Story
What retailers search:
-
How to write better product descriptions
-
Product storytelling examples for small businesses
Even a perfectly positioned product will flop if the delivery is flat.
Instead of:
“Made with organic ingredients. Long-lasting scent.”
Say:
“You’ve just closed the door after a chaotic day. You light this candle… and exhale.”
Here’s how to elevate your story:
-
Tell a moment, not a list
-
Use real customer language (from reviews, DMs, market stalls)
-
Visualise the story in your content:
E.g. show a soap bar next to a gym towel, not floating on a white background.
When the story resonates, sales follow.

What retailers search:
-
How to merchandise a slow-selling product
-
Why aren’t people noticing my product?
Sometimes the problem isn’t the product, it’s where or how you’re showing it.
Ask yourself:
-
Is it buried in a generic collection like “gifts”?
-
Is it on the bottom shelf or lost in a carousel?
-
Is the image flat, studio-shot, or uninspiring?
Try this instead:
-
Make it the star. Feature it solo across email, homepage, or social.
-
Switch from flat lay to lifestyle.
-
Recreate the environment where it solves the customer’s problem.
E.g. Selling a bag for school runs? Show it next to a snack bar, coffee, and keys.
4. Create Urgency (Without Discounting)
What retailers search:
-
How to create urgency without discounts
-
How to increase conversions on product pages
Slow sellers often suffer from slow decisions. And most customers don’t say no, they say “later”… and never return.
Here’s how to drive urgency ethically:
-
Time-sensitive context: “This colour won’t restock this season.”
-
Low stock transparency: “Only 5 left in this print.”
-
Exclusive bonuses: Add a freebie, upgrade, or personalised note.
-
Your voice matters: Use energy and intention in your copy.
“I don’t want you to miss this one. It’s one of my personal favourites.”
Urgency done right builds momentum, not pressure.

Grab The Guide Here5. Build a Content Campaign Around It
What retailers search:
-
How to promote a slow-selling product on Instagram
-
Content ideas to boost product sales
Most retailers post once… it flops… and they move on.
But sales come from consistency and variety.
Plan a 7–14 day content campaign, focusing on ONE product.
Rotate through content like:
-
Behind-the-scenes (sourcing, making, choosing)
-
Testimonial or customer use
-
Real-life styling or packing
-
Problem/solution angle
-
Owner insight
-
Stock countdown
-
Q&A or poll (engagement)
Use the Rule of One:
→ One product
→ One message
→ Across all channels
Repetition with variation = customer clarity = more sales.
